On the heels of the release of her third solo album, Familia, Camila Cabello is dropping another debut: a fragrance campaign for Victoria’s Secret. Cabello is the new face of Victoria’s Secret Bombshell, shot by photographer Zoey Grossman. The collaboration marks the brand’s first bilingual campaign (Cabello speaks both English and Spanish in the ads), highlighting the singer’s Mexican-Cuban background.
Cabello is the latest of several celebrity names to team up with VS, which is currently in the midst of a massive rebrand. (ICYMI, the Angels are no longer, replaced by the VS Collective, which features names like Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Megan Rapinoe, Paloma Elsesser, and, most recently, the return of former VS model Bella Hadid). But while the look and feel of VS is evolving, Bombshell—the brand’s best-selling fine fragrance—is here to stay. It’s also going experiential: To celebrate the campaign launch, Victoria’s Secret is hosting The Bombshell Gardens, an immersive scent experience at the High Line in New York City from May 3 to 9.
So what does it mean to be a “bombshell” in 2022? In anticipation of the launch, Cabello speaks to BAZAAR.com via email about the campaign, her own favorite scents, and how she maintains confidence in the public eye.
What made you want to team up with Victoria’s Secret?
I think there was a natural synergy between my journey as an artist and as a person, and the journey that Victoria’s Secret has been on to support women and their authentic selves. The fragrance itself, Bombshell, and the campaign we partnered together to create is all about being confident in who you are and celebrating that person—that you’re always worthy of being seen and enjoying everything life has to offer.
How does it feel to be the star of the brand’s first-ever bilingual campaign?
It’s so special to me. My Mexican-Cuban heritage is core to who I am, and it’s something I really drove back to with my album and reconnecting with everything and everyone that I love. To be able to feel proud and confident to be myself in this campaign, and have it celebrated in this way and on this scale, is incredible.
What was it like working with Zoey Grossman on the shoot?
She has a natural way of capturing authenticity within a person. The second we started shooting, she let me be who I was, embraced the energy I was going for with each image, and captured it all in such a captivating way. It was a fun day on set—the team encouraged me to bring the fragrance to life how I wanted to, and we all celebrated this vision of Bombshell together.
What does being a “bombshell” mean to you?
To me, being a bombshell is having the courage to be who you are, on the good days and the bad days. We’re all human. There’s going to be great days, there’s going to be days when you feel more insecure…but no matter what, you stay true to yourself. It’s about owning your desires, what makes you feel joyful, and celebrating yourself and who you are every day. There’s a bombshell in everyone, and it’s a way of life and confidence that’s ours to embrace.
Do you have any pre-photo shoot rituals or routines?
I love catching up with my glam squad. The night before, I do a nourishing face mask and exfoliate. I give my skin some extra love, too.
What are some of your favorite scents?
Scents are so incredibly powerful because they can take you right back to a moment in time, a special feeling, or even remind you of your loved ones. Whether it’s the delicious smell of Cuban food, the sweet scent of some of my absolute favorite candles, or even my mother’s own natural scent when I give her a hug that reminds me of home, I am instantly transported to a place of love and comfort. It is so remarkable what a scent can do for one’s emotions in such a beautiful, sometimes visceral way.
You’ve been outspoken about how paparazzi photos affect your body image. How do you maintain your confidence at the end of the day?
Confidence is all about owning who you are, exactly the way you are, no matter what that may look like. It takes strength and courage to remind yourself that you are human and are doing the best you can day in and day out. Self-love is what helps us all remain bold and confident, and this is a practice I always prioritize. I encourage everyone to celebrate their individuality and feel empowered by it so that in turn, it becomes contagious.
